(Toronto - February 28, 2006) - The Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences has been honoured as a top contender in the sixth annual Conference Board of Canada/Spencer Stuart National Awards in Governance announced on February 9, 2006.

The National Awards in Governance are presented to organizations that have implemented governance innovations.  The Michener Institute was recognized as a leading candidate in the Public Sector category, facing competitors such as the National Arts Centre in Ottawa and this year’s winner, The Canada Foundation for Innovation which won the Award for 2006.  “All of the top contenders raised the standard of governance in their organizations, and are creating tomorrow’s best practices,” said Anne Golden, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Conference Board of Canada and co-chair of the awards program.

“This is an outstanding achievement for Michener.  Further, it’s a resounding endorsement for the governance model that has only very recently been implemented to secure the long-term success and sustainability of the organization,” said Wendy Sutton, Board Chair and Governor, The Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences.  “This honour is a compelling inducement for the Board of Governors to pursue and persist in our governance work, while forging stronger relationships and linkages with our communities and ultimately, building greater recognition for Michener’s contributions to education and health care.”

The National Awards in Governance celebrate how Boards and governing bodies can be creative and innovative in their approaches to good governance, while demonstrating that public institution boards, like that of The Michener Institute, can work resourcefully within the bounds of their mandated reporting and accountability relationships.

“This is a very proud accomplishment for The Michener Institute and for the Board of Governors who have worked diligently to earn this honour,” said Dr. Paul Gamble, President and CEO, The Michener Institute.  “Certainly, The Michener Institute has benefited from the Board’s policy governance structure, however the people of Ontario whom the Board represents, are the ultimate recipients of the educational services and academic excellence in the applied health sciences that we continuously strive for.”
